Teacher Effects on Students’ Socio-Emotional Skills and Young Adult Outcomes

Using rich cohort data in the United Kingdom, I estimate teacher value-added on students’ test scores and socio-emotional skills in primary school. I find that teachers play a crucial role in both the development of students’ test scores and socio-emotional skills. Conditional on teacher effects on students’ test scores, the impact of teachers on students’ socio-emotional skills persists over time and extends into early adulthood. These teacher effects predict various economic and social outcomes measured at ages 18-20, including university attendance, labour market outcomes, risky health behaviours, pro-social activities, and overall well-being.
